    Baton Rouge Historic Homes

Do you know that Baton Rouge is divided into parishes rather than counties? Moreover, with the city's abundant share of ancient structures, traveling to Baton Rouge is like taking a trip down memory lane.

When we speak about Baton Rouge historic homes, the Magnolia Mound Plantation tops the list. This French Creole house was built in 1791 but has maintained its original plan and charm for more than 200 years. The entire house was constructed using cypress beams and flooring. For more information on this significant attraction, visit its website at www.magnoliamound.org.

Also noteworthy among the Baton Rouge historic homes is the Nottoway Plantation. With its location above the Mississippi River, this huge mansion shows an unorthodox blend of Greek architecture and modern designs. Done in 1859, Nottoway Plantation possesses many characteristics which were rare back then. For a more comprehensive read, check out its website at www.nottoway.com.

Known as the oldest plantation home ever recorded in the Mississippi, the Destrehan Plantation has endured both civil and colonial wars and has held on to its splendor since its establishment in 1787. For directions and business hours, access its website www.destrehanplantation.org.

The San Francisco Plantation is undeniably the most unique and genuinely-restored among the Baton Rouge historic homes in terms of design and color. Constructed in 1856, this popular landmark is home to an 1830 Slave Cabin, an 1840 Schoolhouse, and a Museum Store, all situated under 3-century old Oak trees. For tour schedules, visit www.sanfranciscoplantation.org.

Myrtles Plantation is not only among the famous Baton Rouge historic homes, but is also known as one of the country's "Most Haunted Homes". Built in 1796, this more than 2-century old plantation boasts of its 120-foot veranda, French furnishings, crystal chandelier, hand-painted glass, and its ghosts. To know more about it, visit www.myrtlesplantation.com.

Tours on Laura Plantation were once considered as the "Best History Tour in US". Constructed in 1805, its 12 buildings include salve quarters and speak much about Creole people: lives of its children, women, and slaves. For more information, check out www.lauraplantation.org.

Otherwise known as the "Grand Dame of the Great River Road", the Oak Alley Plantation can be reached after passing through a quarter of a mile of giant old oak tree canopy which leads to this antebellum home. For details about tours and accommodations, visit www.oakalleyplantation.com.

Baton Rouge historic homes do not only serve to educate us of the city's rich past, but they exist to provide us with something to motivate our imaginations with.
